Now, more than ever, people are looking to get into excellent physical shape. With the presence of fitness gurus and hard bodies on Instagram and other social media platforms, the bar has almost been raised in terms of how “the norm” looks.

However, not everyone has the time or opportunity to make the trek to the gym regularly to work out. It’s not surprising then, that global sales of fitness equipment have consistently been on the rise, and exercise bikes are some of the most in-demand products.

Marcy ME 709 Recumbent – Best Budget Product

stationary bicycle of 2018

Are you on the hunt for a budget-friendly recumbent bike to workout on? If that’s the case, you need to check out the Marcy ME-709 Recumbent Exercise Bike! Despite being so easy on the wallet, it’s packed full of features you’re going to love!

As one of the best exercise bikes to lose weight, you’ll increase cardio strength and get rid of unwanted pounds without having to worry about taking up a bunch of room at home. With the ME-709, you’ll find similar features that are commonly found on much more expensive bikes. Along with that, you’ll benefit from the compact design that works in corners and tight spaces.

Weighing 66 pounds, it’s not very difficult to transport, either.

Despite being relatively lightweight, the user weight limit for this model is 300 pounds, which is heavier than most of the other exercise bikes we encountered. As it’s so sturdy and well-made, heavier users can feel confident using this bike.

Getting off and onto the seat is quite simple, and the armrests also add an extra layer of support when lowering the seat and getting up. They can also be removed if they’re an issue.

With 9 pre-set levels of smooth magnetic resistance delivered by the eddy current, you’ll be able to change your routine up to suit you and your current fitness level and goals. The workout metrics are easy to read and display all the necessities: speed, distance, time, as well as the number of calories you’ve burnt.

While this is great in terms of adaptability, it does not have any preset workout programs, nor a heart rate monitor. However, there are various products you can use in conjunction with the bike.

How is it in terms of comfort?

It’s not bad, but it could be better. The padded seat provides a good amount of support while you’re working out. This is very important in the best exercise bikes, as you’re most likely going to be sitting for the duration of your workout. The seat is adjustable from seat to pedal distance, and works for users all the way shorter than 5 feet, to over 6 feet tall.

The counter-balanced, weighted pedals feature foot straps to ensure your feet stay in the right place the entire time. Since it has magnetic resistance, it’s very smooth, but also quiet, which is nice if you like working out in the early hours.

Overall, it’s difficult to find an exercise bike that’s as adaptable and so well-made as the ME-709, at this low of a price, so if you’re on a budget, check this one out!

What We Liked

  • Holds up to 300 pounds of weight
  • 9 pre-set levels of smooth magnetic resistance
  • Quiet operation
  • Great for those on a budget

What We Didn’t Like

  • The seat could be more comfortable
  • Doesn’t come with heart rate monitor or preset workout programs

Exerpeutic Folding Bike – Most Convenient Product

best recumbent exercise bike for the money

If the ME-709 wasn’t quite what you had in mind, but are still searching for one of the best upright exercise bikes, then check out the Exerpeutic Folding Bike. It’s the most convenient product we saw in terms of bikes, and it’ll give you a serious workout.

Much like our previous product, it also supports users up to 300 pounds; however, we felt it wasn’t quite as stable as the last, which could be a hindrance for heavier users. In contrast, it is still relatively sturdy and well-built, with steel tubing, and the seat made it very easy and natural to get on and off of.

To add on, there are leg stabilizers which make sure the bike doesn’t tip over, and if you need to move it from one place to another, the wheels and overall light feel of the bike make it easy.

The ergonomic seat is quite large for a bike that takes up so little floor space. In fact, it may be too big if you’re a really petite person. Thanks to generous padding, it’s also quite cushy and comfortable. It’s easy to adjust, and suits users ranging anywhere from 5 feet and 3 inches, to 6 feet and 1 inch in height.

How about sound?

This upright exercise bike runs smooth and quietly, due to the three-piece “high torque” crank system, which makes sure the pedaling motion doesn’t randomly stop. The 8 different resistance levels make for smooth pedaling, and allow you to move up in difficulty as your fitness level advances. It also lets you switch up your routines.

The V-belt drive and flywheel are what is going to make the workout so quiet. You can listen to music or watch TV without any annoying noises coming from the bike, and if you enjoy working out while others are sleeping, this is a great solution.

Let’s move on to the technology aspect:

The LCD screen is quite simple but works well. The heart rate monitor and calorie counter are included, however, we did notice that the results weren’t always the most accurate, so take this with a grain of salt. The speed and mileage data, however, proved to be much more accurate, which is a great way of tracking progress.

recumbent exercise bicycles

Oh, and did we mention the fact that it folds?

Yes! It folds to half of its normal size, to make storage much easier, as well as relocating the item to another room, or whatever you like. If you only have a small space to work out in, this is also a great solution.

So, are there any other downsides?

The only real complaint we had, is that the pedals are mounted farther forward than the other bikes we reviewed. This is, of course, to help it fold, but the downside to that is that you have to put more effort into your pedaling.

This is great for burning calories, but due to the fact that there is no back support, you could apply more stress to your back.

What We Liked

  • Durable, sturdy frame
  • Compact frame folds in ½ for easy storage and travel
  • Quiet, smooth operation
  • Large, padded seat
  • Comes with 8 different resistance levels

What We Didn’t Like

  • Calorie counter and heart rate monitor read-outs aren’t the most accurate
  • Pedals are mounted forward, causing more stress on back

Sunny Health and Fitness Pro – Best Spinning Product

best buy exercise bikes

If you take a look at Amazon stationary bikes, you’re bound to see the Sunny Health and Fitness SF-B901 Pro Indoor Cycling Bike at the top of their list.

It’s one of the best exercise bikes for the money, and is also a practical piece of equipment for a beginner to advanced athlete, looking to lose weight or simply improve their level of fitness. It’s basic, straightforward, and durable, but high-performing.

This spin bike for home use is relatively lightweight, however notably solid and sturdy. The 40-pound flywheel is probably the most notable feature, but we’ll get back to that later. It’s also adjustable, making it suitable for just about any user.

First off, the design is attractive, and will definitely not be an eyesore in your home. The red and silver are perfectly contrasting and add a modern, sleek twist to the spinning bike.

Let’s start back with the flywheel. If you’re not an experienced rider, you should know that a 40-pound chromed solid flywheel is much heavier than what you’ll typically find in small exercise bikes.

spin bikes for home use

What does that mean?

It means that the workout is going to be more effective, directly in relation to the weight of the flywheel; and one clocking in at 40 pounds is going to help give the feeling of that real road-bike momentum that you don’t get in most products at this price.

It has felt pads for adjustable pressure resistance, as well. So, the heavier the flywheel, the smoother your ride will be.

Speaking of resistance, changing up the intensity of your workout or intervals is essential if you want to keep surprising your body, thus advancing your level of fitness. Change it up with the handy tension knob. Simply twist to increase or decrease the level of resistance.

Comfort is also crucial, right?

small stationary exercise bikes

With this stationary cycle, you have padded, adjustable handlebars which are adjustable either higher or lower. The multi-grip handlebar features a comfortable, ergonomic design which is suited for various types of hand and grip positions. The middle of the handlebars even features a little space for you to hold up your magazine, book, or even tablet.

The seat is fully adjustable, as well.

The leather, padded seat moves forward, backward, and up/down to your preference. Adjust it for height and proximity to the handlebars for a maximum level of comfort and performance! Simply do so by the twist of a knob.

Let’s get to the things we weren’t fans of:

One is the fact that it is missing any type of “modern” features, such as an LCD screen with stats like calories burnt, distance, and so on. For many users, that’s not a big deal, but it’s definitely worth noting.

In addition, the seat wasn’t the most comfortable, but by throwing on a gel cover, this can easily be remedied.

What We Liked

  • Solid, sturdy frame
  • Fully-adjustable seat and multi-grip handlebar
  • Great value for such a high-quality product
  • 40-lb. Chromed flyweight for a more realistic road-bike momentum

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn’t have any electronic features
  • Seat isn’t as padded as others

bike workout machine

Created with a magnetic resistance mechanism, you’ll immediately notice who smooth and silent this ride is! This is especially important in work environments, even if you work in an office at home or on the road.

The pedals are large enough so that you can comfortably ride even barefoot if that’s your thing.

The 39-pound flywheel doesn’t hurt either and keeps the pedals moving consistently to give you a better, more efficient workout.

Included with this compact stationary bike is a display computer that has a ten-foot extension cable. The display shows your speed, as well as distance, calories burned, and the time you’ve been working out for.

Keep in mind, if you’re using the DeskCycle on a type of smooth surface, like wood or tile flooring, combined with a wheeled desk chair, you may have trouble staying put. If this is a problem for you, make sure to utilize the included tether to attach your chair!

What We Liked

  • Small, compact, convenient design with low, wide base
  • Magnetic resistance and 39-pound flywheel provides smooth ride
  • Quiet operation great for working
  • 9 different tension levels are easily adjustable

What We Didn’t Like

  • Have to use the tether if on smooth flooring and using a wheeled desk chair

Diamondback 510SR – Editor’s Pick

exercise bike reviews upright

If you want one of the best recumbent stationary bikes out there today, then keep on reading.

The Diamondback 510SR is an all-around top performer with a solid reputation for high-quality construction. It’s sturdy, attractive, comfortable, and features high-tech abilities that aren’t often seen in other bikes.

Coming pre-loaded with a whopping twenty automated workout routines, you’ll receive programs including target heart rate, as well as 16 different levels of resistance. This allows you to simulate different types of cycling conditions to help you switch things up on your body, allowing you to break through plateaus and further advance.

In addition, you’ll find strength programs, interval, hill climb, and even fat burning programs. Many of them will adjust the resistance level based on where your heart rate is at. This is measured by the contact sensors which they’ve conveniently and smartly placed in the handlebars, themselves.

Feel free to manually control the resistance through the push-button controls, as well.

Now, onto the fun stuff:

So far, we haven’t seen a whole lot of digital features on the products we have listed. However, the Diamondback 510Sr is different. It features a large display console with a back-lit LCD screen. The display keeps track of multiple statistics, including heart rate, speed, distance traveled, calories burned, and more. This is all done in real-time, as well!

That’s not all, though.

There are the contact sensors in the handlebars, which gives you your real-time heart rate status, and the console features integrated stereo speakers, audio jack, and a fold-out tablet rack to browse your favorite media while you work out. Oh, and if you get hot, which you probably will, there’s an adjustable fan to keep you cool!

exercise bikes for seniors

Are you looking for something ultra-comfortable? Of course, you are!

This stationary bike has an ultra-cushy seat bottom, but the seatback is where it really shines. It’s made of a type of non-stick mesh material, which promotes airflow, making sure you’re not sticking to the back during your workout. It’s also adjustable in height, which allows for multiple users.

The step-through design just adds to the ease of use and is created without a center step-over bar which is often seen in recumbent bikes. The step-through design is easier, as you don’t have to hop over the bar like you’re trying to get on a horse!

With so much positive, was there anything we didn’t like?

If we are really picky, we’d have to say it’d be nice to have the ability to track workout statistics from each day, but since most don’t offer that, It’s not a huge deal, anyway

What We Liked

  • Ultra-comfortable seat bottom and seatback with great airflow
  • LCD screen shows various types of statistics in real-time
  • Built-in handlebar sensors track heart rate
  • 20 different programs depending on your goals
  • Excellent warranty

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn’t have the ability to track daily stats

Schwinn 130 – Best High Tech Product

best small exercise bikes

Are you searching for one of the top stationary bikes that are also upright? Check out the Schwinn 130 Upright Stationary Bike: an affordable, yet high-quality fitness machine for at-home use.

The Schwinn 130 allows you to use your core stabilizing muscles to keep your body weight balanced in a cycling position most of us have been familiar with since childhood.

Schwinn is also a brand you’ve probably known since then. It’s an iconic brand with a long history of producing particularly innovative, high-quality products, and the 130 is no exception.

The body and frame of this compact, stationary bike feature two integrated levelers to make sure you have a solid, sturdy platform and don’t have to worry about anything tipping over or wiggling around.

he transport wheels, however, make it easy to move when you actually do want to move it – say, to another room. The oversized crossbar tubing adds to the stability and sense of security.

How’s the display?

best recumbent exercise bike consumer reports

Great! The SchwinnDualTrack Two-LCD window system lets you monitor up to a whopping 13 different display feedbacks! On top of that, it gives you integrated tracking and data export so you can keep track of your progress and goals all the time. The USB charging port lets you export and exchange data through SchwinnConnect and/or!

Acoustic chamber speakers give you big, high-quality sound that will encourage you to go the distance, and block out any distracting noises! They’ve also thoughtfully added a handy beverage holder, and a three-speed workout fan to keep you cool!

It’s loaded with 22 workout routines, as well, and nine of them are controlled by heart rate status. Two of them, are fitness tests, to let you test your progress.

What didn’t we like? The pedals.

The poor pedal design means that little room is left between the pedals and the main body of the bike. This sometimes causes users’ shoes to brush up against the sides of the machine. In addition, the pedals themselves are a bit cheap.

What We Liked

  • High-quality, stable build design
  • Adjustable console and seat
  • Preset workouts with 22 workout routines and 20 resistance levels
  • USB port lets you charge devices and transfer data
  • Data on console provides a variety of statistics

What We Didn’t Like

  • Pedals are too close to body for some, and not the highest quality

Best Exercise Bike  – Buyer’s Guide

As you may have noticed by now, there are a ton of different features and variables when it comes to the best exercise bikes! You need to take into consideration your own goals, current fitness level, preferences, and more.

That’s why we’ve gone ahead and created a buying guide so that you can simply read through and know which route to take in finding the best product for you!

Price is obviously important when it comes to purchasing just about anything, but keep in mind that price is not directly related to the level of quality every time.

There are many great budget options in stationary cycles, but if you want the more luxurious features like backlit LCD screens with real-time statistics, integrated speakers, and whatnot, you’ll have to pay for them.

Unlike weight limit, you can choose the features you want from a bike. Perhaps you really like reading books while riding your bike. Choose one that has a little stand or media area where you can place your Kindle or book!

Perhaps you want one with integrated speakers because you don’t like wearing headphones, or you want one that can monitor your heart rate in real-time.

These are all feasible options, but not every bike is going to have them.

The longer the warranty period, the better the deal is (generally speaking). However, exercise bikes aren’t often guaranteed by their producers for a long period. Two to three years on moving parts is generally good, but some offer many more years!

If you only have a small space to work out in, then you’ll want to pay special attention to this. Some bikes take up more room than others, but if you can find one that folds, it’s ultra-convenient, especially if you live in a condo or apartment.

This means you can easily store it in a closet or even under the bed, possibly! If you don’t need the extra space, then having integrated wheels is always nice to easily move it around as you’d like.

If you’re serious about your fitness or losing weight, then you’re going to need a bike that is easily programmable or has various levels of resistance or programs. With a programmable bike, you can select between various preset programs, such as obtaining strength or increasing cardiovascular strength.

You probably noticed that there are multiple kinds of exercise bikes. These are recumbent, upright, indoor cycling, and spinning bikes.

Recumbent bikes are generally known as the one with the least impact. It has a chair-like seat that is typically very cushy and provides a good amount of lumbar support. If you have back problems, this is a great machine to use.

Upright bikes are the most widely available, and typically feature wider, well-padded seats that are also comfortable. These bikes work to strengthen those smaller muscles that help you balance, as well as the buttocks, lower back, and quads/hamstrings.

Indoor cycling bikes are almost the same as uprights, except they feature a heavy flywheel. These create momentum that can be countered with brakes or resistance levels. They feel very similar to a road bike and are smooth and quiet.

Spinning bikes are the ones you’ll typically see at the gym. They’re essentially the same as an indoor bike but are a specific brand.

We truly loved each of the exercise bikes we have reviewed in our guide, today. However, there were a couple that really stood out to us. Our editor’s pick was the Diamondback 510SR, for many reasons. It’s overall very durable and sturdy and features convenient wheels to move easily when needed.

The seat was ultra-cush and featured breathable mesh so your back doesn’t get all hot and sticky while working out. The LCD display is high-quality and features real-time updates of just about any statistic you need.

20 different programs allow you to switch things up easily, and keep progressing. The handlebars also have built-in heart rate sensors.

A close runner-up was the Schwinn 130, and ultimately, the only reasons why it wasn’t our favorite, was that we didn’t particularly like the pedals, and that the seat wasn’t as comfortable as the one from the 510SR.

Whichever one you choose, however, know you’re about to get one of the best exercise bikes on the market, today!
